Founder and Chairman of the Portuguese Physiological Society
Started my academic career at U.Lisboa (Physiology Institute School of Medicine) where I got my PhD (1992). Professor of Human Physiology and Physiopathology at U de Lisboa, and since 1997 at Grupo Lusófona where I lead the School of Health and also CBIOS the universitie's Biosciences and Technologies Research Center. Extensive experience in teaching in practically all areas of health training. Regarding research I authored a long list list of publications and communications. Skin and microcirculatory physiology are preferred areas. At CBIOS I run (PI) the Systems Modeling Laboratory developing non-invasive technology for measuring in vivo variables; modelling and analyzing related biological signals; studying the intervention of peripheral sensors in multi-systems regulation, among others. The physiology and pathophysiology of the skin as well as various aspects of safety and effectiveness of topical skin products have been another important domains which lead to initiatives as the EEMCO Group (www.eemco.net) and The Portuguese Society of Cosmetic Sciences (http://www.spcienciascosmetologicas.org/) among others. I am the editor-in-chief of the Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research journal (http://www.alies.pt/en/about-bbr.html).
