MARGARET MORRIS
Margaret Morris is Professor and Head of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine at UNSW Sydney. She is a teaching/Research academic with experience at 5 Australian Universities.
Morris’ research explores the drivers, as well as impacts, of obesity and metabolic disease, using relevant animal models to explore underlying mechanisms and test novel interventions. Current work includes intergenerational transmission (through both father and mother) of obesity and the impact of adverse early life events on later health outcomes.
Her lab also examines the factors driving overeating in the modern world, e.g. how does provision of a varied, energy rich diet over-ride the regulatory mechanisms that should maintain body weight?
Another major interest is the impact of sugar, and fat, on cognition and the relationship between changes in gut microbiota, hippocampal gene expression, and behaviour. The metabolic changes that accompany obesity, and the role of the gut-microbiome-brain axis in disease is a key focus.
She has published more than 250 peer reviewed articles which have been cited over 12,600 times and has an H index of 58 (google scholar).
