Short c-vitae:  Dr. Sílvia M. Rocha has a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra. In 1997, she completed her doctorate at the University of Aveiro. Currently, she is an assistant professor at the Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro and is the departmental coordinator of the Erasmus and Campus Europe programs in the area of Biochemistry. Besides that, she is also Vice-Director of the 1st Cycle in Biochemistry and Departmental coordinator of the Unit for the Transfer of Technology from the University of Aveiro (UATec).

Her scientific interests are based on sample preparation, especially using solid phase microextraction (SPME) techniques and gas chromatography (GC, GC-MS and GC × GC-ToFMS); Development of methods based on gas chromatography and mass spectrometry for quality control of products and processes in the food industry; Valuation of natural products: bioprospecting of components potentially beneficial to health; Metabolomics: use of comprehensive analytical techniques to establish metabolic profiles of biological samples (body fluids, cells, plants, microorganisms) and the study of changes in metabolism resulted from external inducements; Diagnostic tools for diseases; Asthma - Metabolic studies by GC-MS and NMR in order to establish patterns of molecular markers useful in disease management.
